More and more Swiss pensioners spend their retirement in Germany, where housing and living costs are lower, the franc is strong – and there is no wealth tax. Depending on the constellation, the move can also worthwhile for employed people.
The commentary
According to the FDFA, the proportion of pensioners who emigrate has been increasing. At the end of 2021, 21.1 % of Swiss citizens abroad were minors, i.e. under 18 years of age. The proportion of those aged 18 – 64 was 56.4 % and the one of those aged 65 and over 22.5 %. Compared to 2020, the respective population groups have increased by 1.4 %, 1.1 % and 2.7 %. As in the previous year, the increase was most pronounced in the group of people older than 65 years.
