The commentary
The slump in deal volume by almost half, from USD 138.5 billion in 2022 to USD 72.2 billion in 2023, is striking. The KPMG report assumes a slight upward trend again for the current year. Around 20 % of all transactions in 2023 were in the industrial goods sector (98 transactions and a deal volume of around USD 6 billion), which means that for the first time since the Corona virus crisis, the industrial goods sector has overtaken the telecommunications, media and technology sector as the second most active sector on the M&A market. For the current year, KPMG expects both M&A activity and the transaction volume to pick up slightly again, not least due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), the IT requirements of companies are becoming increasingly complex. According to KPMG, this development might have an impact on the transaction business.
