The case

According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), cases of bankruptcies increased in Switzerland last year.

The commentary

In 2023 a total of 15,447 bankruptcy proceedings were initiated, 440 more than in 2022. Bankruptcies had already increased in 2021 and 2022. Figures show that the increase in the number of bankruptcies has slowed down significantly compared to the previous years 2021 and 2022, the FSO reported. In 2022, a year-on-year increase of 6.6 % was recorded, while the increase in 2021 was as high as 9.1 %, and financial losses from bankruptcy proceedings decreased compared to 2022.

The total amount of damage caused by company bankruptcies fell by 12 % to CHF 2 billion, though this year a wave of bankruptcies has apparently been rolling across Switzerland as a late consequence of the coronavirus pandemic.

By comparison, 51,637 new companies were founded in Switzerland in 2023, an average of 141 companies per day. This is an increase of 3.2 % compared to 2022. According to the FSO, an average of approximately 45,500 new companies were founded each year over the last 10 years. Compared to this figure, company start-ups in 2023 have increased by 13.7%.
