The case

The Council of States wants to weaken the sanctions against Russia and lift the ban on legal advice in favour of the Russian government and  Russian companies.

The commentary

This step was taken because of constitutional concerns, particularly regarding the fundamental right to be heard. The ban on legal advice was part of the eighth EU sanctions package, which Switzerland adopted at the time.

Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin did warn of the foreign policy consequences of this relaxation, but it seems he was not heard.

The motion was adopted by 34 votes to 10.

The matter now goes to the National Council.
