The case
The Allianz Global Wealth Report 2024 shows a significant recovery in global household wealth after a decline in 2022. In 2023, total household wealth increased by 7.6% in the 60 countries analysed. This recovery was a positive surprise after the 3.5% decline in the previous year and points to a more optimistic outlook for global financial stability.
The commentary
The report’s ranking, which is based on data in euros, shows that the United States has overtaken Switzerland and now leads the world in per capita wealth. Americans now have an average net worth of €260,000 (CHF 247,000 or $284,000) per person, a significant increase of 9.8%. Switzerland follows closely behind with per capita wealth of €255,000 (CHF 241,000).
Countries such as Denmark, Singapore, Taiwan and New Zealand round off the top positions and show a broad distribution of wealth across several regions. European countries such as Italy, France and Germany also feature on the list, but are ranked 14th, 16th and 18th respectively. This new data reflects the changing dynamics in global wealth distribution and the resilience of household wealth in 2023.
