The case
In 1848 the canton of Lucerne closed St. Urban monastery and their assets fell to the state who then also had the right to appoint clerics to their posts (Kollaturverpflichtung).
The commentary
After this agreement was signed in 1848, it was agreed that the Catholics of the community of St. Urban would no longer have to pay church taxes. After this agreement was cancelled in 2024, the canton of Lucerne has to pay St. Urban 7.5 million francs, and as of now the Catholics of St Urban will have to pay church taxes just like other Catholics in Switzerland. This also entails that as of now the Catholic community can appoint clerics.
