The case

Gustave Caillebotte (1848 – 1894) was not only a painter, but also the initiator of the Musée d’Orsay.

The commentary

In his will, Caillebotte bequeathed his extraordinary collection of Impressionist paintings to the French state.

Luxury group LVMH, headed by mega-collector Bernard Arnault, acquired La partie de bateau, which Caillebotte painted in 1877/1878, for the Musée d’Orsay. LVMH is said to have paid € 43 million, which proves that Caillebotte is one of the most sought after artists of that period.
