The case

Swiss artist Manuel Andreas Dürr achieved a remarkable milestone in his artistic career when he was crowned winner of the international competition where participants were asked to design a new ‘Via Crucis’ (Via Dolorosa, i.e. Jesus Christ’s procession route that marks his sufferings) for St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

The commentary

Dürr’s project was selected from art works submitted by nearly 1,000 artists worldwide. This monumental project is set to enhance the cultural and spiritual heritage of St. Peter’s Basilica, providing a fresh lens through which to experience the story of the Passion of Christ.

Starting from 18 February 2026, Dürr’s paintings will be displayed during the Passion period and Easter period, enriching the spiritual experience for pilgrims and visitors.
