The commentary

With 32,616 bankruptcies in 2024, the number of business closures has risen by 13.2% compared to the previous year. This could indicate industry-specific problems (particularly in sectors like construction and catering), such as increased material costs, a shortage of skilled labour or the after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the wave of bankruptcies, 2024 was a record year for start-ups: 52,977 new companies were entered in the commercial register. The net growth of companies (new start-ups minus bankruptcies) was 486 companies lower than in 2023.
