Federal Council to ratify Council of Europe Convention

The commentary

Switzerland has taken a significant step towards regulating artificial intelligence (AI) by planning to ratify the Council of Europe Convention on AI and amend its national laws accordingly. The Federal Council reaffirmed this commitment in its meeting today, emphasizing the need for sector-specific AI regulations, particularly in healthcare and transport.

The Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) will take the lead in drafting a bill for consultation. The Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will collaborate.

The draft bill is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. This move aligns Switzerland with international AI governance efforts while ensuring domestic laws keep pace with technological advancements.
