The case

Gianni Berengo Gardin photographs Giorgio Morandi’s studio.

The commentary

The CAMERA OSCURA exhibition at the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia presents 21 evocative black-and-white photographs by master photographer Gianni Berengo Gardin, taken in 1993 in Giorgio Morandi’s studio, just before it was dismantled when the Museo Morandi was inaugurated at Bologna’s Palazzo d’Accursio.

Morandi’s works fetch high prices—though rarely sold, they break records, including a US $4.3 million sale in 2018—a rare oval still life from Rockefeller’s collection.
