The case

The number of company bankruptcies in Switzerland rose sharply in the second quarter of 2025. 3,068 companies had to close, which marks a 26.6 % increase compared to the same period last year.

The commentary

Creditreform announced last week that a total of 6,453 companies went bankrupt in the first six months, 15 % more than in the previous year.

The construction industry accounted for the majority of bankruptcies (444), followed by the catering industry (327) and the retail trade (223). The highest percentage of increases were in the catering industry (+ 55 %), the IT services industry (+ 43.8 %) and the facility management, gardening and landscaping sector (+ 40.9 %).

There were 9,257 deletions from the commercial register in Q1/25, corresponding to an increase of 12.2 %. This compares to 13,828 company formations, a slight increase of 1.3 % compared to the same period last year.
