The commentary

According to a report in the New York Post, citing anonymous sources, a UBS delegation led by Chair Colm Kelleher and CEO Sergio Ermotti recently met with officials from the Trump administration to discuss the potential relocation of the bank’s headquarters from Zurich to the USA in connection with a possible merger or acquisition involving an American institution.

Meanwhile, American clients continue to turn to Swiss banks as a safe haven. Switzerland’s long-standing reputation for political stability, economic strength and neutrality makes it an attractive alternative amid growing global uncertainty and protectionist US trade policies.

Martin Hess, an economist at the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA), notes: “Geopolitical tensions have clouded the outlook and caused sharp fluctuations in exchange rates. In such an environment, security has become a much sought-after commodity.”
