The commentary
The free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) — which includes Switzerland, Norway, Iceland as well as Liechtenstein — officially enters into force on 1 October 2025. Swiss companies stand to benefit significantly from this milestone agreement, which marks India’s first comprehensive FTA with European partners.
Key benefits for Swiss business include: India will abolish or reduce import duties on over 95 % of Swiss industrial exports, unlocking estimated annual savings of up to CHF 167 million. Sectors such as machinery, precision instruments, watches, chemicals, and medical technology are among the biggest winners.
The FTA improves legal safeguards for Swiss patents, trademarks and geographical indications, reinforcing Switzerland’s competitive edge in innovation-driven industries.
Swiss firms in finance, insurance, engineering as well as consulting gain improved clarity and predictability in the Indian market, including provisions for temporary movement of skilled professionals.
The agreement aims to attract USD 100 billion in investment over 15 years and foster 1 million new jobs in India, offering new opportunities for Swiss companies to participate in India’s growth story.
