The commentary
Switzerland plays a pivotal role in the international art ecosystem. Art Basel, widely regarded as the world’s most important fair for modern and contemporary art, takes place in Basel each June. Quite a number of internationally active auction houses maintain a presence in Switzerland, including Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Artcurial, Bonhams, Phillips and Grisebach. The country’s largest domestic auction house is Koller Auktionen.
Switzerland is also home to Hauser & Wirth, one of the world’s leading galleries for contemporary art, headquartered in Zurich. In addition, the country boasts a strong community of internationally renowned collectors and museums with world-class collections. Swiss artists such as Pipilotti Rist, Urs Fischer and the duo Fischli/Weiss have further contributed to Switzerland’s prominent standing in the global art world.
