The case

Swiss agriculture is currently grappling with overproduction.

The commentary

This issue is particularly pronounced in the dairy sector and pork sector, where rising production volumes have been exerting their downward pressure on prices, which, in turn, resulted in reduced incomes and emergency exports. Stocks of potatoes and wine are also reaching critical levels.

Experts have warned that only a coordinated adjustment of production by farms and industry associations can restore a balance. Should these efforts fail, government intervention must be considered as a potential measure.
