The case

In 2024, the assets of Switzerland’s 1,292 pension funds increased to CHF 1,220.6 billion, up from CHF 1,129.1 billion in 2023. Net investment returns amounted to CHF 83.7 billion (2023: CHF 54.2 billion), leading to higher value fluctuation reserves and a further reduction in funding shortfalls.

The commentary

Equities increased to 31.6 % of total assets (2023: 30.2 %), while bonds declined slightly to 26.9 % (2023: 27.3 %) and real estate to 21.9 % (2023: 22.5 %).

A total of CHF 24.4 billion in statutory contributions was paid by 2.1 million women and 2.7 million men. Employers contributed an additional CHF 34.1 billion. Retirement lump-sum and partial lump-sum payments totalled at CHF 17.1 billion, averaging CHF 280,210 per recipient (2023: CHF 15.0 billion; CHF 261,362).

At year-end, annual old-age pensions amounted to CHF 26.1 billion, corresponding to an average pension of CHF 27,815 per beneficiary/year (2023: CHF 27,983).
