The case
Swiss citizens over 60 years of age have increasingly been leaving the country. In 2024, 6,161 people emigrated, which amounts to almost double the number of people emigrating in 2012. (FSO/NZZ, 15 February 2026).

The commentary
The major driving force are the financial incentives: Lower cost of living as well as favourable tax regimes. Dubai offers a renewable five-year retirement visa with no income tax for those with a monthly income of CHF 5,000, CHF 250,000 in assets, or property worth CHF 500,000. Panama grants permanent tax-free residence to pensioners earning USD 850 per month, and you can obtain Panamanian citizenship after five years. Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay, the Philippines and Mauritius also provide affordable retirement programmes, making overseas living increasingly attractive for Swiss retirees.
