The commentary

The Origin of the World has a long history of concealment. Now, the small yet provocative masterpiece is being shown in Vienna at the Leopold Museum, taking center stage in a major retrospective celebrating the French pioneer of realism, Gustave Courbet.

Gustave Courbet (1819 – 1877) paintings sell at auction for prices ranging from thousands to over USD 15 million, with major works highly sought after. A record USD 15.28 million were fetched for “Femme nue couchée”. 2025 – 2026 auction prices for landscapes, portraits or smaller works generally range between USD 5,000 and over USD 300,000, depending on provenance and condition.
