The commentary
The exhibition offers a fresh perspective on paintings so familiar that their radical nature has often been overlooked. For the first time since 1985, when the last major Renoir retrospective was held at the Grand Palais in Paris, some of the artist’s and Impressionism’s most important masterpieces will be brought together again in France.
Renoir’s works continue to command exceptional prices on the art market. His Impressionist masterpieces frequently achieve tens of millions of dollars at auctions, with a record of USD 78.1 million achieved in 1990. Major paintings, particularly those from the 1870s, often exceed USD 10 million, while smaller works, drawings, and later pieces typically range from several thousand to a few million dollars.
