The case
There is not going to be any birthday gift from Switzerland on Donald Trump’s table with presents on 14 June. It also still remains unclear whether the gifts presented by “Team Switzerland” last November have legal consequences.

The commentary
To this date, the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland has declined to comment on the matter. One of the complainants, Swiss parliamentarian and lawyer Raphaël Mahaim, said that he intended to request a written update on the status of the proceedings.
Mahaim also pointed to an initiative launched in January by Democratic US Senator Ron Wyden. In a letter reported by Bloomberg, Wyden raised concerns with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer over Trump’s acceptance of valuable gifts from prominent Swiss business leaders shortly before the United States more than halved tariffs imposed on Swiss imports. Wyden argued that the timing created an apparent conflict of interest that could constitute a violation of the US Constitution’s Emoluments Clause.
