The special exhibition at Kunstmuseum Basel features more than 50 works spanning six decades, offering a remarkable overview of the artistic work of Helen Frankenthaler.

The commentary

A pioneering figure of Abstract Expressionism, Frankenthaler transformed modern painting through her groundbreaking soak-stain technique, which became a defining influence on the development of Color Field painting in the United States from the 1950s onwards. The exhibition also explores her enduring dialogue with art historical masters from the 15th to the 20th century, placing selected works in direct conversation with her paintings to provide new perspectives on her abstract art.

Helen Frankenthaler’s large-scale paintings usually fetch between USD 3 million and USD 8 million at auctions. Her current auction record stands at USD 7.9 million for “Royal Fireworks” (1975), while her legendary pioneering 1952 canvas “Mountains and Sea”, widely considered her most historically significant work, was acquired privately for an estimated USD 70 million.
