Fuelling the surge in demand were trophy works long held by celebrated collectors such as S. I. Newhouse Jr. and Agnes Gund. Masterpieces by Jackson Pollock, Constantin Brâncuși, Mark Rothko and Joan Miró all set new auction records.
One of the auction’s fiercest bidding battles centred on Pollock’s Number 7A, 1948. Swiss gallerist Iwan Wirth of Hauser & Wirth competed intensely against several rivals for nearly seven minutes, eventually falling short. The painting described as a “historic opportunity” sold for USD 230 million to an anonymous absentee bidder.
