The case

The commentary

The vision is already becoming reality at Quai Vernets, where residents began moving into the first completed building in April. The nine-storey red-brick complex, built on the site of former military barracks, comprises 515 rental apartments draped around a landscaped inner courtyard. Roughly two-thirds of the units are reserved for non-profit housing, reflecting Geneva’s efforts to expand the supply of affordable homes.

The development is intended to be more than just a residential area. The ground floor will host shops, restaurants, a daycare centre as well as spaces for cultural events. A primary school is also planned. The site is located near the Arve River, whose banks attract families and visitors on warm days.

With projects such as Quai Vernets, Geneva is seeking to address its chronic housing shortage by means of long-term urban planning while setting new standards for sustainable city development.
