The commentary
Switzerland has earned USD 15 million so far: USD 10 million for qualifying, USD 1 million for reaching the Round of 32, and another USD 4 million for beating Algeria – and it is only at this level that the SFV starts to break even. If the team is eliminated by Colombia, the SFV expects to keep only approximately USD 1 million for investment in elite and grassroots football.
At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, by contrast, the SFV made a profit of USD 3 million despite lower FIFA prize money.
The difference is largely due to the weaker US dollar, US taxes on FIFA payments as well as significantly higher operating costs. The Swiss delegation requires single rooms, exclusive hotel facilities, private training grounds and extensive logistical support. Combined with salaries, performance bonuses and taxes, the World Cup campaign has cost around USD 11 million so far.
Players’ bonuses will increase with every round, although the SFV has not yet disclosed the figures. National team director Pierluigi Tami said: “For the SFV, it is a lot of money. Whether it is also a lot for the players is another question.”
