The case
Founded in 1802, the Schaffhausen-based company has evolved into one of the world’s leading suppliers of plastic piping systems for water infrastructure. Yet, despite this transformation, GF has remained associated with the foundries that laid the foundation for its success more than two centuries ago.

The commentary
The company is now closing that chapter by selling its remaining three foundries, located in Ticino, Switzerland, and Romania, to a U.S. industrial group. The sale will generate proceeds of CHF 220 million, a sum which is significantly above market expectations.
With the divestment, GF will become a pure-play provider of flow solutions, focussing exclusively on piping systems for water supply and other critical infrastructure. The transaction marks the final step in the company’s strategic transformation away from its traditional foundry business.
