The case

Zurich’s public transport operator (VBZ) plans to procure up to 100 battery-electric buses through an international tender.

The commentary

The move follows delivery delays and quality issues involving Swiss manufacturer Hess, as well as dissatisfaction with MAN.

While no contract has been awarded, Swiss media have reported that Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and Yutong could emerge as strong contenders.

The coverage in the Swiss press has been balanced. The Chinese manufacturers are commended for their competitive pricing and advanced electric bus technology, though concerns remain over cybersecurity, strategic dependence and the impact on Switzerland’s domestic industry.
