The case

Rising housing costs have been prompting many Romands to consider relocating across the French border.

The commentary

According to a recent survey, 70 % of respondents in French-speaking Switzerland say housing costs are too high. Around 4.2 % are already actively searching for a home in France, which amounts to the equivalent of approximately 92,400 people.

Longer commutes remain the main barrier. Four in ten respondents say they would not accept additional travel time to reduce housing costs, while another 34 % would tolerate a commute that is no more than 30 minutes longer. Although living in France offers significant financial savings, many say the move is only worthwhile if the daily commute remains manageable.

Note: Residential property prices rose by 0.7 % in the second quarter of 2026. admin.ch
