The case

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) is reducing the share of banks’ sight deposits that are remunerated at the full policy rate.

Source: SNB

The commentary

As of 1 August 2026, the threshold is lowered from 15 % to 13.5 %. This adjustment reflects higher minimum reserve requirements and supports the effective implementation of monetary policy. The SNB’s monetary policy stance remains unchanged.

What does this mean for customers?  This measure primarily affects banks and is unlikely to have a direct impact on most customers. Any effects on savings accounts, mortgages or other banking products are expected to be limited and will depend on how individual banks respond to the lower interest income.
