The commentary
Organized by the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts (MCBA), which holds one of the most significant collections of Vallotton’s art, in collaboration with the Fondation Félix Vallotton, a center dedicated to research and documentation, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on an artist renowned for his sharp intellect, critical eye and biting wit.
Spread across more than 1,400 square meters, the exhibition unfolds both in a chronological and thematical manner, revealing, for the first time, the full range of Vallotton’s creative universe. Vallotton the painter and printmaker is shown with the artist as the illustrator and press caricaturist, highlighting the diversity and coherence of his artistic vision.
Featuring over 250 works, including numerous masterpieces from Swiss and European collections, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover Félix Vallotton as a key figure of modern art.
The record price reached at an auction for Vallotton’s painting “Tulipes Perroquet, Fond Bibliothèque” amounted to almost USD 4.76 million. More recent sales sport a wide price spectrum, such as woodcut prints selling for between USD 28,000 and USD 35,000. Paintings have been achieving high prices figuring in the millions.
