The commentary

In their most recent report, the SSC highlights the potential for the further development of existing academic computing infrastructures in a targeted and sustainable way so growing demands can be met, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

If Switzerland wants to remain competitive in AI research and innovation, a national computing infrastructure with sufficient computational capacity, skilled personnel, reliable services as well as strong international connectivity will be required. In this context, “computing resources” encompass not only hardware, but also the full range of services, expertise and support needed to ensure effective use by researchers and institutions.

To be able to meet these requirements, the SSC recommends the development of a multi-tiered and interoperable national computing infrastructure system spanning regional, national as well as international levels. The proposed framework should be guided by a coherent national strategy, overseen by a dedicated strategic committee and be supported by long-term funding mechanisms.
