Switzerland has become a consistent force in both football and ice hockey, yet the same old barrier has remained: The Swiss football team has never reached a World Cup semi-final, while the hockey team, again and again, has been beaten in the fight about the world champion title in the very last match.

The commentary
The explanation is simple. It is not about defence, tactics, fitness or mentality. Switzerland has proved it can match the world’s best in all those areas, the difference lies in attacking talent.
The biggest matches are decided by players capable of producing moments of brilliance under maximum pressure. Switzerland has developed many outstanding players, but has not managed to come up with enough elite attackers who can consistently decide games at the highest level.
The reason for this is largely demographic. A smaller population entails a narrower talent pool and, in turn, a lower probability of producing truly exceptional players. In Switzerland, this pool is split between two equally popular sports: Football and ice hockey.
The fact that both national teams belong to the world’s elite is already a remarkable achievement, but crossing the final hurdle requires something no coaching system can produce: Several world-class attacking players emerging at the same time. Until this is the case, Switzerland will remain a serious contender but cannot become a champion.
